Provider Information & Referral Services
Allied Psych provides sub-acute neuropsychiatric assessment and care. The practice also offers diagnostic and rehabilitation services for functional and neurocardiac disorders, and interventions for conditions involving stress physiology.
Visit our conditions treated and clinical services pages to learn more about the practice, who we treat, and what we do. If you have any questions regarding the appropriateness of a referral, please call the practice at 910-515-4200.
We offer a convenient online, secure (256-bit SSL) referral form for expediting referrals. We are highly service oriented and unlike so many cogs in the healthcare wheel today (managed care companies, pharmacies, etc.), we will respond to your referrals and inquiries quickly and with respect for your time as a busy professional. We highly value the relationships that we have with many area medical practices. We pride ourselves in providing excellent collaborative care to the many practices that refer patients to us. Our assessment services provide timely, concise and cogent reports to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of your patients. We offer care-intensive services, medical case management, and patient education. By referring out these services that can drain a high volume practice of resources, we can help your practice operate more efficiently, free up your time to allow you to provide essential acute care, and help you ensure high patient satisfaction. |
Below are examples of services we currently offer to referring providers:
AD/HD Assessment
Support your treatment decisions with documented neurometric analysis - we offer continuous performance testing for variables of attention and QEEG brain map assessments for medication recommendations and diagnostic support. Timely summary report fax back service included.
AD/HD Treatment
Allied Psych offers AD/HD treatment recommendations for patients from referring practices. We offer medication management services for adult AD/HD and can assist in medication recommendations for pediatric patients. For patients who cannot tolerate or do not wish to use medication for treatment, we offer QEEG-guided EEG-neurofeedback, a highly effective and well studied treatment modality for AD/HD. Supportive counseling sessions for parents of AD/HD children are also available.
Anxiety and Stress Management
Allied Psych provides assessment and treatment for chronic stress and anxiety, including support for patients who have anxiety consequent to a major medical condition. Mr. Porter developed and uses an effective treatment protocol incorporating heart rate variability biofeedback and capnometry (breathing) biofeedback especially designed to treat panic disorder and stress related anxiety.
Brain Injury Assessment & Treatment
Allied Psych offers QEEG analysis to help in the diagnosis and treatment of mild to moderate post-concussive syndrome from traumatic brain injury (TBI). QEEG assessment for brain injury is a covered service for most health insurance plans. We also offer EEG neurofeedback, an innovative technology for the remediation of cognitive deficits associated with TBI. Other support services at Allied Psych for brain injury include computer based cognitive training for neurorehabilitation, computer based cognitive testing, medication management, case management and disability support, and psychotherapy.
It is important to keep in mind that symptoms resulting from post-concussive syndrome are not always proportional to the extent of the original injury. In some cases, symptoms can persist even when the original injury was relatively mild or moderate. The current understanding of the underlying pathology of mild to moderate traumatic brain injury involves a paradigm shift away from a singular focus on anatomic damage to an emphasis on neuronal dysfunction involving a complex cascade of physiological events. Clinical signs and symptoms include poor memory, decreased speed of processing, headaches, emotional changes, fatigue, and sensory impairments such as dizziness that result from this underlying neuro-metabolic cascade. QEEG studies of the diagnosis of TBI demonstrate a high level of sensitivity and specificity.
The QEEG/MRI project of the Defense and Veterans Head Injury Program (DVHIP) replicated and extended the earlier QEEG studies of TBI, adding additional validity and reliability to the use of the QEEG in the diagnosis of TBI. One of the major US health initiatives is improved diagnosis and intervention for TBI. The CDC estimates that at least 5.3 million Americans, approximately 2% of the U.S. population, currently have a long-term or lifelong need for help to perform activities of daily living as a result of a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Allied Psych diagnoses and treats post concussive syndrome associated with auto accidents, sports injuries, slips and falls, combat related injuries, and other causes. Injuries severe enough to cause a TBI frequently result in concomitant post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Screening and treatment for PTSD is also part of the assessment for patients referred to Allied Psych for head injury. Mr. Porter also has expertise in the assessment and treatment of PTSD.
Headache Management
Allied Psych offers breathing, heart rate variability, temperature, and s-EMG (neuromuscular) biofeedback for the management of chronic migraine or muscle tension headache. Supportive therapy and case management is a wrap-around service offered to patients with chronic headaches. The American Academy of Neurology endorses biofeedback as a proven modality for the treatment of chronic headache conditions, and it is a covered service by most health insurance plans.
Quantitative Medication Selection
Allied Psych offers digital EEG data collection to aid in medication selection and treatment. Precise medication selection can result in decreased morbidity, shorter recovery period, reduced costs, reduced adverse reactions, and improved treatment outcomes. The digital EEG is sent to CNS Response, a third party medical service that analyzes the data through a proprietary data system known as the referenced EEG (rEEG). The rEEG is a patented biomarker assessment system to guide pharmacotherapy. The EEG/QEEG database currently includes children from age 6 to adults age 90 and covers a broad range of DSM diagnoses.
Physicians have over 130 psychotropic drugs from which to choose to use with patients with mental disorders, but only subjective, patient-reported symptoms on which to base their treatment. Unfortunately, the dominant approach to prescribing in psychiatry is “trial and error” medicine, so it’s no surprise that treatment failures in disorders like depression range from 40 to 60 percent.
From May, 2006 Neuropsychiatry Reviews: "Various uses of quantitative EEG are emerging as possible ways to predict positive and adverse psychotropic medication responses," reported Daniel A. Hoffman, MD, chief medical officer of CNS Response, and while no one is ready to toss out the DSM-IV just yet, there is now increased evidence that the use of referenced EEG (rEEG) can sometimes do better than clinical diagnostic techniques in determining which psychotropic drugs will help an individual patient or in predicting whether a particular patient will do better without any medication at all.
This service is gaining widespread use as its advantages become more widely recognized through improved patient outcomes and lowered healthcare costs.
